“Construction” is not a market. Sub-niches split a desk into the segments you actually recruit — civil, fit-out, residential — so you can filter the board, see which segment is hiring, and pitch each one in its own language. Tag companies yourself for free, or let AI propose a taxonomy for 1 credit.

What a Sub-Niche Is

A sub-niche is a label on a company within one desk. The desk is the market; sub-niches are the segments inside it. One desk might carry three or four — enough to tell apart companies that need different conversations, few enough that you can hold them in your head.

Sub-niche chips sit across the top of the desk. Click one and the whole page filters to that segment: feed cards, companies, the lot. Click it again to clear.

Tagging Companies

One at a time — set or change a company's sub-niche from its row on the Companies tab. Clearing it returns the company to untagged.
In bulk — select companies on the Companies tab and use the Set sub-niche bulk action to tag them all in one go.
Your tags stick — anything you set by hand is marked as a manual choice, and AI will not reclassify it later. If you decide a company is Civil, it stays Civil.

Tagging companies yourself — individually or in bulk — is always free. Only the two AI actions below cost credits.

Managing the Vocabulary

The chips themselves are yours to edit. You can add a new sub-niche, rename one (companies keep their tag), or retire one you no longer use. All free.

A chip you add by hand has no matching keywords until you run Suggest, so it will not pick up companies automatically — assign to it yourself, or run Suggest to have AI fill in the matching rules.

Suggest Sub-Niches (1 credit)

On a desk with no sub-niches — or one where you want more — Suggest sub-niches reads the desk profile and a sample of its mapped companies and proposes two to five segments.

It only ever adds — suggestions merge into your existing chips. An existing sub-niche is never overwritten or removed by Suggest.
It tags what it can — after suggesting, it classifies untagged companies against the new taxonomy. Companies you tagged by hand are left alone.
Charged on success only — 1 credit when suggestions come back. If the AI call fails, the desk is unchanged and nothing is charged.

Desks created before sub-niches shipped start with none. Running Suggest once is how an established desk gets its first taxonomy.

Tidy Up a Sprawling Taxonomy (1 credit)

Because Suggest only adds, a desk you have run it on several times can accrete twenty near-duplicate chips. Tidy sub-niches fixes that, and it works as preview-then-apply so nothing changes without you agreeing to it.

  1. AI proposes a plan over your current chips — which to keep, which to merge together, which to drop, and any worth adding.
  2. The plan appears with a tick per line. Accept the lines you agree with and ignore the rest.
  3. Apply. Only the lines you accepted are executed, and companies freed by a merge or drop are reclassified against the tidied taxonomy.
The plan costs 1 credit, applying is free — and only when a usable plan comes back. If your taxonomy is already tidy, or the AI call fails, nothing is charged.
Your manual tags are protected — when you apply, every line is re-checked against the desk as it stands right now. A merge whose target has since changed is skipped, and a drop that would strip a company of a sub-niche you set by hand is skipped too.

Cost Summary

Free — tagging companies (one or in bulk), adding, renaming and retiring chips, filtering by chip, and applying an accepted tidy-up plan.
1 credit — Suggest sub-niches, charged only when suggestions are returned.
1 credit — Tidy sub-niches, charged only when a usable plan is returned.
